I’m about to start driver’s ed. How long overall does it take to get my driver’s license?

First, complete your
driver’s education course
. Driver’s ed may last 2-6 weeks or be a self-paced online course. Then, you’ll need to drive for a certain number of hours supervised before you can take your test. In some states, you may have to have a learner’s permit for six months and log 50 driving hours before you can take your test. Once you schedule and take all portions of your driving test—potentially including a vision test, knowledge test, and road skills test—you’re eligible for your real license. It may take up to 15 business days for you to receive your plastic driving license in the mail. Remember that 15 business days is more like three weeks, because business days do not include weekends! Here’s what to do while you wait for your real license:
  • Keep your permit/paper license with you whenever you drive.
  • Remember that you are legally considered a licensed driver, even with a paper license.
  • Do not attempt to travel at an airport with your paper license—only a plastic license will work.
