Is driving barefoot illegal in California?

When it’s warm out, I go to the beach with my kids and then drive home barefoot so I don’t get a bunch of sand in my car. Someone told me recently that that’s illegal. Is it against the law to drive barefoot in California?

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not illegal to drive barefoot in California—or in any other state in the U.S. It’s just an urban legend.
In fact, driving barefoot is safer than driving in flip-flops or heels, since your shoe can’t get caught on the pedals!
However, it’s still not recommended to drive without shoes. If you’re involved in an accident or another traffic infraction and the police believe that driving barefoot may have contributed, you could receive a
citation
.
Instead of driving home from the beach barefoot, try keeping a pair of designated beach shoes in your trunk. You’ll still be confining the sand without the need for barefoot driving!
