Is a used BMW a good first car?

I’m shopping for my teenager’s first car. A friend of mine is selling their BMW and told me they’d give me a good deal. I’m not sure, though—is a used BMW a good first car?

It would be a luxurious first car, that’s for certain—but in general, a used BMW doesn’t make a good first car. Don’t get us wrong—BMWs are a benchmark of performance luxury cars, and they’re lovely inside and out. But there are a few factors that make them a less-than-stellar choice as a first car:
  • High cost of ownership: BMWs are expensive to maintain and repair, and this can be too much of a financial burden for a new driver.
  • Poor reliability record: in general, BMWs don’t have the best record when it comes to reliability
  • Too much power: BMWs are built for driving enthusiasts, and one might be a bit too powerful than a new driver can safely handle (or should reasonably have).
Of course, you didn’t say what kind of BMW it was or what year it was, and that could possibly make a bit of a difference. But no matter what, make sure you shop around to get the best deal on your
car insurance
for your new driver. A
towing and labor coverage
policy can offer you some parental peace of mind in case of a breakdown!
