Following the 2021 merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) with the French PSA Group, multinational corporation Stellantis owns Jeep
. Before the rise of the SUV as the vehicle of choice for rugged adventurers and families on the go, there was the Jeep: the sturdy four-wheel-drive vehicle ready to tackle any challenge, from the battlefield to the open road. Although the brand’s changed hands a half-dozen times since the first production car was launched in 1945, Jeep has been owned by Chrysler
and its parent companies since 1987. Want to learn more about who owns Jeep and where the brand’s vehicles are made? Car insurance
super app Jerry
has all the answers (and Jerry could save you over $800
on car insurance). Who owns Jeep?
As of January 2021, Jeep is owned by a multinational automotive corporation called Stellantis.
If that name’s not ringing any bells, there’s a reason: Stellantis is a new corporation, created out of the merger of some more familiar names. In December 2019, Italian-American Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA) and French-owned PSA group (Peugeot Société Anonyme) agreed to a $50 billion merger which was finalized in early 2021. It’s now among the top ten automotive companies worldwide, with Toyota
, VW
Group, and Renault-Nissan
leading the pack. What other makes does Stellantis own?
The 2021 merger brought together 16 auto makes under the Stellantis umbrella. Among them are European luxury makes like Alfa Romeo
and Maserati
, along with the American automotive bread and butter of “CDRJ”—Chrysler
, Dodge
, Jeep
, and Ram

Where are Jeeps made?
Although the headquarters of the parent company Stellantis is located in Amsterdam, the Jeeps at your local dealership are still made in the United States—for the most part. Jeep, which is headquartered in Toledo, Ohio
, has a total of 10 manufacturing facilities worldwide, including plants in Brazil, China, India, Italy, and Mexico. Most Jeeps and their component parts are assembled in the US. Here’s where each of Jeep’s most popular models comes from:
The Jeep Compass
and Renegade, along with the parts that go into those models, are primarily manufactured overseas. Although the Melfi plant is the major site of Renegade manufacturing, there are also Jeep factories in Goiana, Brazil, and Guangzhou, China. Key Takeaway Jeep’s image as an all-American manufacturer is mostly true—but the Renegade and Compass models are primarily made overseas.
A short history of Jeep ownership
Jeep wasn’t always part of Stellantis—or, before that, the Chrysler group. When the Jeep first moved from the battlefields of World War II to civilian production in 1945, it was owned by a company called Willys-Overland.
In 1941, when the US Army approached car manufacturers looking for a new design for a reconnaissance car with four-wheel drive capabilities, Willys-Overland won the contract. Chief engineer Barney Roos helped to design the Willys MB, the iconic “sardine tin on wheels” that used the cumbersome yet powerful Willys “Go-Devil” engine. When the war ended and the troops returned home, so did the Jeep, in the form of the CJ-2A (“Civilian Jeep”).
Once Ford’s biggest competitor, Willys-Overland soon became synonymous with the Jeep, a brand so strong it became the generic word for the kind of light four-wheel-drive vehicles we now know as SUVs. In 1953, Kaiser Motors bought Willys, phased out other vehicles, and became Kaiser Jeep.
Kaiser, in turn, was bought by American Motors (AMC) in 1970, which sold 17 years later to Chrysler. Jeep has been owned by Chrysler ever since, but Chrysler itself underwent multiple mergers and acquisitions. After Chrysler’s 2009 Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the company merged with Fiat to create Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the same company that’s now half of Stellantis.
