Is a sedan an electric car?

My wife and I are talking about buying an electric car, and she says she wants a sedan. When I looked it up, it said that sedans are gas vehicles. Is a sedan an electric car?

Great question! Sedans can be electric or gas.
Sedan refers to the body style of a vehicle. It has a three-box configuration consisting of one compartment for the engine, one for the passengers, and one for the cargo. Think of it as: hood, seats, trunk. This is a classic car setup, seen in regular four door cars since as far back as 1912.
There have been many different ways to refer to cars body types through history, but the seven modern terms we use for body styles currently include:
  • Hatchback: With a door across the full width at the back of the car that opens upwards.
  • Sedan: Passenger vehicle with three compartments for engine, passengers, and cargo.
  • MUV/SUV: Multi utility vehicle or sport utility vehicle. Combines features of on-road and off-road vehicles, including increased ground clearance and four-wheel drive.
  • Coupe: Has a fixed roof, two doors, and sloping rear.
  • Convertible: Has a folding or detachable roof.
  • Wagon: A variant of a sedan with an extended passenger compartment that flows into the trunk.
  • Van: Medium-sized transport vehicle, usually with sliding side-panels.
  • Jeep: Small- to medium-sized vehicle with four-wheel drive.
Sedans have been around for a long time, and therefore are available in both gas and electric varieties. An example of a gas sedan is a

.
An example of an electric sedan is the
Tesla Model S
, which comes from one of the most famous electric vehicle providers. However, if that’s a little rich for your blood, there are plenty of other manufacturers who make electric sedans
