In a Nissan Versa, how many cylinders are in the engine?

My wife wants to get our daughter a Nissan Versa as her first car since they’re so affordable. We live in a bigger city and she’ll have to drive on freeways pretty often, though, so I’m wondering if the engine is sufficient for highway driving. How many cylinders does a Versa have?

That’s a valid concern! In every
Nissan Versa
model, you’ll find a four-cylinder engine under the hood. Since 2007, all Versas have been equipped with a four-cylinder engine, though the horsepower and transmission pairing have varied. Let’s take a look at each generation:
  • The first hatchback iterations of the Versa contained a 1.8-liter four-cylinder producing 122 horsepower with a standard six-speed manual transmission. The first Versa sedan, however, came with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder capable of 107 horsepower and paired with either a manual or an automatic transmission.
  • The second generation of Versas (from 2012 to 2019) featured a 1.6-liter four-cylinder that produced 109 horsepower. The base trim came with a five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic transmission.
  • The current Versa generation saw a boost in horsepower with a 122-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The base transmission is still a five-speed manual, but most models are equipped with an automatic continuously variable transmission.
The 2023 Versa got a fresh new design, but it still sports the same engine as previous models. While the 122-hp engines are definitely not the most powerful on the road, the fuel efficiency (35 mpg combined) and staggering affordability ($16,825 MSRP) more than make up for it.
