If my car had an oil leak after being towed, can I report it to my car insurance?
My car (VW GTI) was towed by the city on Monday and the next day I discovered an oil leak. If I believe the towing company caused this leak, can I submit a claim to my insurance? I live in New York City.

, it’s unlikely that this scenario would be one of the covered perils listed on your policy. Instead, you could report the damage to the towing company and seek reimbursement. They likely have their own
liability insurance
coverage, which would cover any damage they cause. You could also reach out to the city. If they authorized the towing of your vehicle, you may be able to seek reimbursement from them for the damage. You’ll want to check the New York City official website under the City Claim section to verify whether the damage is covered.
Both the towing company and the city may require proof that they caused the oil leak. You may be required to submit things like maintenance records or other documentation.”
