How will I know when my car needs an oil change?

I drive a 2004 Nissan Murano, and I haven't changed the oil in a while. Can you tell me how to know your car needs an oil change?

Great question! Your car can give several warning signs that it’s time to get an oil change.
First, familiarize yourself with the service lights on your dash. Most newer cars will have a specific light that indicates it is time for an oil change following the manufacturer’s
recommended service schedule
.
A telltale sign is visible and excess exhaust coming from the tailpipe. This indicates that the oil is too old to support normal engine function.
If you don’t see exhaust, increased engine noise can be another sign of old oil. Motor oil lubricates the moving parts of the engine, so dirty or old oil will prevent the parts from moving freely and generate a tick or ping noise.
