The BMW
X3 plug-in hybrid is on the loose. Despite the camo wrap, high-res photos captured the newest electrified version from the German automaker. Though its facelift is only a year old, the next-generation X3 will arrive as soon as 2024. Jerry

, gives the latest scoop on the fourth-generation hottest-selling nameplate.BMW X3: a mystery prototype
The current X3 was launched in 2017 as a 2018 model year and received a mid-cyle revamp for 2022. In 2021, the popular model sold 75,858 units, making it BMW’s best-selling car in the U.S. And if tradition serves, the new BMW X3 will hit the market within the next couple of years.
The spy team at Motor 1 spotted two new X3 test vehicles but were most excited about the hybrid model. Since the vehicle had “Electrified” on the side, it was easy to tell the difference.
It was also easy to spot the charging door underneath the camouflage. The placement is the same in existing BMW plug-in hybrids like the luxurious BMW X5
. Overall, the dimensions seem bigger, which makes sense given this may be an M series X3
. The BMW grille design has evolved over the years, becoming larger and incorporating buck teeth otherwise known as kidney grilles. The outline of the BMW X3 grille (though allegedly covered with false panels) appears to be a little bigger than we’re used to.
Holes can be seen underneath for air intake. The base of it sits nicely above the license plate, leaving space for a large division to the lower fascia’s vents.
It’s possible the face may be less-chiseled and feature round openings instead of odd angles and boxy vents. The rear displays similar features, with more angular lines in the license plate area. The roof designs and window housing appears to remain untouched.
Placeholder taillights remain, for now, indicating the company is still early in its testing process. Or maybe they’re the real deal, featuring an updated X1 style LED headlight. Let’s not get too excited.
BMW X3: further speculations
The platform is expected to be an updated version of the current X3's CLAR design, with a standard rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive should be optional as well.
With standard mild-hybrid technology, we’ll likely see turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 and 3.0-liter inline-6 engines, along with plug-in hybrid power.
The wheel design is the same as the current X3 M40i and the quad exhaust setup also suggests that the new BMW X3 will be a part of the M family.
It’s pretty much impossible to get a peek inside the interior cabin, but it’s likely to follow the same designs as the newest 2023 X1, M3 touring, and the latest 7-series.
We expect there to be a 10.7-inch infotainment system with an updated iDrive system, and a single curved-glass unit with a 10.25 MID.
Production is likely underway at BMW Group's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where the latest X3 is manufactured.
The electric version may be assembled at a BMW group plant (under construction) in Debrecen, Hungary. The Hungarian plant is also set to build Neue Klasse vehicles.
A late 2023 debut is expected for the BMW X3, which will likely make the next-generation car a 2024 model. Depending on production schedules, its debut could possibly be pushed to 2025.
