How much mileage should a used car have?
I’m in the market for a used car, but I’ve never been car shopping on my own. People talk a lot about the mileage of a used car being good or bad—but I don’t know much about that. How many miles on a used car is too much?

Determining how much mileage a used car should have can be tricky since there are a lot of different reasons why a car might have more or fewer miles on it.
Generally, the rule of thumb is 12,000 multiplied by the age of the car is a reasonable amount of total miles. This formula comes from the estimation that people drive about 12,000 miles a year. So if you’re looking at a 10-year-old car, mileage around 120,000 is a decent place to be.
Shoot for:
- About 60,000 miles on a 5-year-old car
- About 84,000 miles on a 7-year-old car
- About 108,000 miles on a 9-year-old car
