How much liability am I on the hook for after an at-fault accident with a rental car in Hawaii?
"I rented a car for vacation in Hawaii and caused a pretty big accident involving a few cars. I had the collision coverage from my credit card, but I waived the liability from the rental agency.
Since I live in NYC and don't need to drive anywhere, I don't have my own car insurance as a backup plan. What will happen now?"

“There are several factors to look at here, but the first thing you should do is contact the rental car agency and your credit card company and let them know of the accident.
The credit card company may have a maximum limit or some stipulations on their
collision coverage
payout, and you would want to find out what they are right away. Most rental car agencies provide the state minimums for
liability coverage
with your rental; you might have just waived the rental car insurance
that provides additional coverage. The state minimums for Hawaii are as follows:- $20,000 bodily injury per person per accident
- $40,000 bodily injury for all persons per accident
- $10,000 property damage liability
- $10,000 personal injury protection
The hard fact is, you will be personally responsible for any damage above these limits for property damage or bodily injury.”
