How do you drive a variable transmission?

My lease is up in a few months, and I’m really interested in switching to a new Toyota model like the Avalon. But the one I’m looking at is equipped with a CVT, and I’m worried it’ll be a big change in driving. How do you drive a variable transmission?

The continuously variable transmission (commonly called a CVT) has been gaining steady traction among automakers over the years. Follow these steps for a smooth transition to a CVT transmission:
  • Step 1: Press gently on the throttle. Harsh acceleration in a CVT-equipped car can also accelerate wear and tear on your transmission.
  • Step 2: Avoid resting your foot on the brake. You should also avoid pressing down on the brake and throttle simultaneously, as any of these actions could damage your CVT.
  • Step 3: Engage neutral in traffic or at red lights. This not only takes unnecessary pressure off of your brakes, but also keeps you safer in traffic situations. However, you should avoid neutral drops.
  • Step 4: Get to know your new transmission. One of the best ways to adjust to a new component is simply by getting familiar with what’s under your hood. Familiarize yourself with your car’s CVT, and the rest will be a breeze!
Overall, driving a car with a variable transmission isn’t much different than driving one with an automatic transmission—but you’ll likely feel the difference.
