How much is insurance for a holiday home?

I recently purchased a second home to serve as a holiday home. I’m familiar with regular homeowners insurance and was wondering whether holiday home insurance is all that different, especially when it comes to cost. How much can I expect to pay for holiday home insurance?

Great question! Much like homeowners insurance, the cost of holiday home insurance is influenced by several factors, with the most significant being location, the amount of building and contents coverage needed, and whatever optional coverages you choose.
That said, on average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000 per year for holiday or vacation home insurance, which is significantly higher than standard homeowners insurance rates.
The jump in price is primarily due to the extra risk associated with holiday homes. Vacation properties stand vacant for large portions of the year, empty homes are prime targets for break-ins, and dangers like gas leaks may go unreported for long periods.
