You’re right, NASCAR racers are fast—and this year’s cars will be no different. NASCAR confirmed that for the 2022 Cup Series, cars will feature a 670-hp engine rather than the 550-hp package used since 2019.
But don’t be fooled, higher horsepower doesn’t necessarily mean a faster lap-time. NASCAR discovered during NextGen testing at Charlotte Motor Speedway that the higher HP racers actually return slower lap-times and fewer passing opportunities since the drivers have to let off the gas more often.
