How much electricity does a plug-in hybrid car use?
I’m used to using public chargers in Los Angeles, but now we’re moving to Northern California. I want to be more informed about how much electricity my 2022 Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid uses each time I charge it up. How much electricity would you say a plug-in hybrid uses?

plug-in hybrids
. With **Series Plug-in Hybrids **or **Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) **as they’re also called, only the electric motor turns the wheels. The gas engine can only generate electricity, and sometimes the auto can rely on that for short trips around town.With** Parallel or Blended Plug-in Hybrids**, The electric motor _and _the engine run the wheels and move the vehicle forward. Only at low speeds will the car operate in an electric-only mode.
Here’s what we know about electricity use from plug-in hybrids:
- Compared to gas-powered cars, plug-in hybrids use about 30% to 60% less petroleum.
- Most households will use a 120-volt outlet where the car can be charged for several hours at a time. Some use a 240-volt charger that speeds up the charging time.
- Recharging at a public charger can take between one to four hours using a 240-volt outlet. Fast charges usually take about half an hour to get your hybrid plug-in back to 80% capacity.
- While filling up with gas is still an option for plug-in hybrids, don’t expect to get the same range or fuel economy.
