How much does it cost to make a car a convertible?

What exactly would it cost me to make a car into a convertible? My wife and I've had the same car for years. We can't afford a new car, so I was thinking about having our's turned into a convertible—but only if it's cheap enough.

Making your car into a convertible is a fun, but pricey way to modify your car. Plus, it’ll make summer road trips a pleasure! In general, convertible conversions cost anywhere from $2,000 to $50,000. Here are some of the biggest price-determining factors:
  • The car’s price. While cheaper cars will usually cost less to modify, nicer cars will be more expensive. It’ll be much more affordable to turn a Nissan into a convertible than a BMW.
  • The car’s body. The top of a car is central in defining its integrity. Simply removing the top can be unsafe, so more work may be needed for cars that aren’t equipped for such modifications.
  • The shop. Labor charges will vary widely from shop to shop. Of course, this isn’t a job that calls for cheap labor. Safe convertible conversions require a professional hand.
Remember, your insurance rate might increase when you modify your car. If the modifications prompt providers to see your car as higher-risk than before, the increase could be substantial. Plus, your new convertible may require more protection—so you should look into buying additional coverage. Contact your provider before you make any changes to find out how a convertible conversion will impact your premium.
