How much does getting your car towed cost?

How much does it cost to tow a car? My car broke down at my friend’s place. Luckily for me, he has a garage so I’ve been keeping my car there until I figure out what to do next. I’m wondering how much it would cost to get it towed.

“I am sorry to hear about your car! Don’t worry, you can get an estimate before requesting the tow truck. That way, you won’t be stuck with a bill you can’t afford.
There are a variety of factors that go into the
cost of towing
, specifically distance, time, and terrain. Here’s what you should know.
  • Distance: For a tow that’s 5 miles or less, you’ll be looking at between $35 to $125. If your car will need to be towed farther, then it’ll be around $125 to $275.
  • Time: If you’re getting your car towed at night, during the weekend, or on a national holiday, then the cost is sure to be pricier.
  • Terrain: If your car is stuck in a ditch or mud and requires a winch, then the cost could be anywhere from $25 to $250 an hour because of the additional labor.
Keep in mind that the cost of towing may differ if your car is being removed from the scene of an accident. You likely won’t be able to consent to the cost ahead of time, either. (Sigh.)
Honestly, the best thing to do to avoid a high towing bill is to get a roadside assistance membership.
