I bought a car charger and I want to make sure it’s compatible with my car lighter. How many volts are in a car cigarette lighter?

Great question. A standard car cigarette lighter produces 12 volts of power.

Most cigarette lighters run on a 10-amp fuse that allows for 12 volts or 120 watts of power output at maximum. There may be some variance on this depending on your vehicle. Check your owner’s manual or the cover of your cigarette lighter socket to find the specific output for your vehicle.

From there, you can find the right car charger for your car. Another option is to get a power brick or portable charger for your car. While it may be tempting, don’t try to change out your cigarette lighter fuse for a more powerful one. Doing so could cause electrical issues and potentially leave you stranded.
