How many mistakes are allowed on the driving test in California?

My driving test is coming up and I’m really nervous. I make stupid mistakes when I get nervous, so I’m worried I’ll choke and fail. How many mistakes can I make and still pass?

The best advice we can give you for your driving test is to stay calm. All you have to do is drive how you normally do, and you’ll be fine! There are a number of mistakes allowed on the driving test in
California
. You can miss up to 15 points and still pass.
Any mistake that doesn’t pose a genuine safety threat counts as one point. The examiner may take off additional points if serious safety mistakes are made, but that’s up to the examiner. Here are some common issues that you may lose points for:
  • Failure to check your blind spot
  • Improper yielding at crosswalks
  • Failure to come to a complete stop
  • Driving too slowly
  • Driving more than five miles over the posted speed limit
Just keep breathing and you’ll do fine! Once you’re fully licensed, you’re almost ready to drive—you just need to insure your car to meet California’s minimum requirements! Don’t stress about shopping for insurance because
