Yes, a lot of Pintos were made in the 70s! During its short 10-year manufacturing period, there were over three million Ford Pintos made. As of 2022, however, less than 10,000 Pintos remain on the road.
This is not because the other 2,990,000 Pintos were scrapped. Rather, the Pinto is an older vehicle that rapidly lost popularity when it became clear that it had some dangerous design flaws—including excessive damage after moderate collisions, as well as collisions accompanied by fires. Unfortunately, fatalities occurred often with the Pinto. A manufacturing defect that caused the rear of some Ford Pintos to explode when the vehicle was rear-ended resulted in 27 people dying.
