How many Ford Pintos were made?

I always see the Pinto in movies from that era, but you never see them on the road anymore. Were a lot of Ford Pintos made in the 1970s?

Yes, a lot of Pintos were made in the 70s! During its short 10-year manufacturing period, there were over three million Ford Pintos made. As of 2022, however, less than 10,000 Pintos remain on the road.
This is not because the other 2,990,000 Pintos were scrapped. Rather, the Pinto is an older vehicle that rapidly lost popularity when it became clear that it had some dangerous design flaws—including excessive damage after moderate collisions, as well as collisions accompanied by fires. Unfortunately, fatalities occurred often with the Pinto. A manufacturing defect that caused the rear of some Ford Pintos to explode when the vehicle was rear-ended resulted in 27 people dying.
As you would expect, these serious safety flaws caused the Pinto to fall out of popularity with drivers.

eventually stopped production in 1980.
Since then, Ford’s technology and quality control have come a long way thanks to better safety standards. Some of the safest Ford cars include the 2021-2022
Ford Explorer
, 2021
Ford Escape
, and 2021-2022
Ford Bronco Sport
which have been named Top Safety Picks by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)!
