What an interesting topic! In 1970, 165,437
Dodge Challengers
were made.
That may not seem like a lot, but don’t forget that 1970 was the very first model year for the Challenger. Prior to that, the streets were filled mostly with Firebirds, Javelins, Cougars, and a multitude of
Mustangs
, Barracudas, and
Camaros
.
However, in just a single year, Dodge took the pony car class by storm with the Challenger. It appeared in the movie “Vanishing Point,” which helped the vehicle rise in popularity very quickly.
From model years 1970 to 1974, the first-generation Dodge Challenger pony car was built using the Chrysler E platform in hardtop and convertible body styles sharing major components with the
Plymouth Barracuda
. It was positioned to compete against the
Mercury Cougar
and
Pontiac Firebird
in the upper end of the pony car market segment.
One reason the ‘70 Challenger was so attractive was its versatility. It was available in a staggering number of trim and option levels and with virtually every engine in Chrysler’s inventory.
