How long should I wait before driving after a C-section?

I just gave birth and had a C-section. Although I know I’ll need time to recover, I also have things to do and places to be. Is there a suggested amount of time I should wait after having a C-section before I can start driving?

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy! It’s generally advised that you should wait at least two weeks before driving after a C-section. However, this will depend on your recovery progress, which can extend the time. To be extra safe, you should consult your OB-GYN before you start driving.
While sitting in a car as a passenger is fine, driving during your recovery period can be risky for the following reasons:
  • You will have a limited range of motion, making it difficult to turn and check your blind spots
  • You will be on pain medication which can impair your driving and reaction times
  • You will tire easily, which can lead to poor judgment when you’re driving
It is best to spend the first two weeks after your C-section at home to recover.
