How long does it take to get your provisional driver’s license?

I just moved to California and got my learner’s permit (I’m 15). I’ve been told that the next step is getting my provisional driver’s license. How long does it take to get this?

Welcome to Cali, and Congratulations on the permit! It takes one year after getting your permit to be able to apply for a provisional license.
Once you’ve had your permit for a year, you can head to the DMV and take a road skills test. If you pass, you’ll get a provisional license.
A provisional license allows you to drive on your own, but it carries restrictions, including:
  • You cannot drive between the hours of 11 pm and 5 am without a licensed adult over the age of 25
  • You cannot transport persons under the age of 20 for the first 12 months unless there is a licensed adult 25+ in the car with you
  • You cannot be employed in a job that requires you to drive a vehicle
Once you turn 18, your provisional license will be converted to a full license.
After securing your provisional license, you’ll want to shop for
