Welcome to Cali, and Congratulations on the permit! It takes one year after getting your permit to be able to apply for a provisional license.
Once you’ve had your permit for a year, you can head to the DMV and take a road skills test. If you pass, you’ll get a provisional license.
A provisional license allows you to drive on your own, but it carries restrictions, including:
You cannot drive between the hours of 11 pm and 5 am without a licensed adult over the age of 25
You cannot transport persons under the age of 20 for the first 12 months unless there is a licensed adult 25+ in the car with you
You cannot be employed in a job that requires you to drive a vehicle
Once you turn 18, your provisional license will be converted to a full license.
After securing your provisional license, you’ll want to shop for car insurance
