How long does it take for a driving record to clear?

I have a few tickets on my driving record, but I’m in the process of shopping for car insurance. I really want to make sure my record is clean before applying for these car insurance policies. How long does it typically take for a driving record to clear?

There’s no single answer for how long it takes for a driving record to clear. Instead, the amount of time needed for it to clear depends on the state where the incident occurred and the type of
ticket
you received.
If you want an idea of when your record might clear, here are some basic guidelines:
  • DUI: 10 years (although Florida’s is 75 years)
  • Reckless driving: 5 to 10 years
  • At-fault accidents: 3 to 5 years
  • Speeding tickets: 3 to 5 years
  • Other moving violations: 3 to 5 years
  • Careless driving: 3 to 5 years
If you have a record of when you received your tickets, you can compare them to the current date to see when they’ll fall off. If they’re less than a year away from falling off, wait to change your policy, as this can impact your rate dramatically.
