How hard is driving a semi?

Traveling for work sounds like a great idea! Although driving a semi isn’t necessarily hard, you do need a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to apply for trucking jobs. Depending on which state you’re in, you may also have to complete training courses before taking your CDL test.
Here are some of the main differences between driving a standard vehicle and driving a semi-truck:
  • Dependance on mirrors: Since the back window of the cab is blocked by the trailer, you have to depend on the side mirrors alone when you’re changing lanes or backing up.
  • Turning the opposite direction when backing up: The steering system on a semi is oriented differently than a regular vehicle and takes practice.
  • Gear shifting: A semi likely will have 10 to 18 gears, and you’ll have to get used to double-clutching to use them properly.
  • Air braking system: Although they’re not challenging to use, air brakes will take some time to adjust to.
Whether you’re driving for work or personal reasons, it’s always important to make sure you have great
