How do you transport bees in a car?

I’ve recently gotten interested in beekeeping and I really want a hive of my own. I met a lady who said she can’t care for her hive anymore and that I can have her setup as long as I come to get it myself. She only lives about 20 minutes away from me but… how am I supposed to move bees in my car?

Beekeeping can be such a rewarding hobby! The easiest way to transport bees in a car is to secure the hive in the bed of a truck so they won’t be able to sting you. If that’s not an option, here’s what to do:
  1. Narrow the openings of the hive with entrance reducers. They’re made of wood, metal, or plastic, and they make the opening smaller so it’s harder for bees to get in and—importantly here—out.
  2. Block any ventilation holes. Not all hives have these, but if yours does, make sure you close them up. Otherwise, bees will escape while you’re driving.
  3. Tape up the whole hive. Use sturdy duct tape and use a lot of it. Make sure every single crack, crevice, and entrance is covered. You won’t have the bees shut inside for long so they should be fine, but this is an important step to protect you.
  4. Place the hive in your trunk. Make sure it’s secured so it won’t slide around—you may need to tuck heavy blankets or towels around the hive to keep it in place.
  5. Once you get home with your new pollinators, open up the hive and give them a chance to settle in.
Just in case the worst happens and the bees escape while you’re driving, make sure you’re covered with a solid
