How far back do insurance companies check driving records?

I’m thinking about switching insurance companies because my current premium is through the roof. However, I have a ticket from about 6 years ago and I’m worried it will still affect my rate. How far back into your driving record do insurance companies look?

Having a ticket on your record can sometimes mean a big premium hike, so it’s a valid concern!
Because auto insurance companies want to know your risk as a driver, they typically look back anywhere from 3 to 5 years at claims, accidents, and traffic tickets. The charges on your record will determine how much your premium increases.
However, how far back the company checks does differ between companies and states, and it can vary depending on the charge. For instance, if you were nailed with a DUI, it will appear on your driving record for seven years and will affect your premium. If you have a violation outside that period and you’re unsure whether a past ticket will affect your insurance rates, call the insurance company to confirm.
