How does the Subaru Impreza WRX hood open?

My kid came home with a used car yesterday and said that smoke was coming out from under the hood while they were driving. I want to make sure all the fluid levels look good before they drive it again, but I can't get the hood up. How do I get the Subaru Impreza WRX hood open?

It is great that you are checking the levels before they get back out on the road! Opening the
Subaru Impreza WRX
hood is easy once you know how to do it. Here are the steps:
  • Pull the interior hood release. It is located to the lower left of the steering wheel, on the dashboard
  • Once you pull the hood release, the hood will pop up, and stay slightly raised
  • Go to the front of your
    Subaru
and locate the safety latch. It is in the space between the hood and the car, right below the Subaru hood ornament
  • Push the safety latch up, and then with one hand lift the hood straight up and with the other hand use the hood strut to secure it
Before you check under the hood, make sure the engine has cooled down. It can take about 30 minutes for an engine to cool down enough to touch.
