Sounds like an exciting trip!
Florida’s Toll-By-Plate system may seem intimidating, but it’s pretty easy to use. Here’s how the Florida Toll-by-Plate works:
As you pass through a toll plaza, a photo is taken of your license plate if no SunPass or other accepted Florida transponder is detected.
A Toll Enforcement Invoice is mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner with a collection of all Florida tolls accrued over a 30-day period, a $2.50 administrative fee is also added.
You cannot rely on the Toll-By-Plate system for Florida Managed Lanes (express lanes)—only drivers with a SunPass or other accepted Florida transponder may use these lanes. If you don’t have either pass, you will be charged a $25 violation fee each day you use it.
If you’re planning on renting a car in the Sunshine State, you also cannot use the Toll-By-Plate system. Most rental cars should have a SunPass you can equip instead. However, there are often added activation fees from the rental car company that can increase your toll expenses.
To avoid those added fees, you may want to consider purchasing a SunPass Portable to use in your rental vehicle instead. You can buy one ahead of time online at sunpass.com, over the phone at 1-888-TOLL-FLA, or in person at AAA and certain pharmacies and grocery stores. You save 25% on tolls with a SunPass (as opposed to Toll-By-Plate), so it’s definitely worth looking into!
