How do you tell if tire pressure is low?

I know I’m supposed to keep my tires at a certain pressure, but I’m not sure how to tell if mine is correct. I’m worried it will drop too low without me knowing. Is there a way to tell if the tire pressure is too low?

Good call on making sure your tires are inflated properly—low tire pressure can definitely cause problems if it’s not addressed right away. Here are a few ways to tell if your tire pressure is too low:
  • Use a gauge
  • Do a visual check
  • Watch for symptoms while driving
  • Look for TPMS alerts
The most accurate way to
check your tire pressure
is with a gauge. This can be done at home or a gas station air pump by pressing the nozzle into the tire’s air valve and reading the number.
You can also check your tires visually. Tires with low pressure will protrude (like they’re being squished) when you view them from the front or back of the vehicle.
Low tire pressure
also causes adverse symptoms while driving. These include longer stopping times, an “off” feeling while turning, a flapping noise while driving, and lower fuel efficiency.
Lastly, if your tire pressure drops below safe driving levels, your tire pressure monitor system (TPMS) is supposed to alert you. Look for a light on the dash panel with an exclamation point inside a horseshoe shape.
