How do employers verify your car insurance?
Is there any way for employers to verify your car insurance? My boss asked me if I have liability insurance for when I'm driving at work. I do, but I'm wondering why she asked me and didn't just look it up online.

Great question! Unlike other countries, the US doesn’t have a centralized system to verify insurance information. The easiest way for employers to verify someone’s car insurance is to ask them for
proof of insurance
. The only other way for employers to gather employee insurance information would be through the police, the DMV, or the state department—all of which have the right to deny requests for information.
While insurance information is fairly well protected, you should be open and honest with your employe about your insurance status. Almost every state requires drivers to have a
minimum amount of coverage
, meaning it’s illegal to drive without meeting those requirements. Plus, the biggest reason your employer cares about your insurance status is liability. If you get in an accident while driving for your company, then your company may be liable for your actions.
