How do you renew a driver's license in Wisconsin?

I’m heading to California in a couple of months for work, and I need to renew my Wisconsin driver’s license before I go. Can I do it online, or am I required to go to the DMV?

Great question! In
Wisconsin
, there are two options to renew your license: online or in person.
When it comes time to renew your license, you’ll receive a reminder notice by email/text or mail 45 to 60 days before the expiration date (your birthday). You can, however renew your license up to one year before expiry.
If you’re between 18 and 64, renew your license online by following these steps:
  • Visit the Wisconsin DMV website and navigate to the Online Driver license/ID services tab
  • Click on “Renew my driver license or instruction permit (Temps)” under the Driver License Services heading
  • Choose the online renewal option
  • Follow the instructions for renewing your license online
If you’re renewing your license in person, here’s what you’ll need to do:
  • Collect the required documents (current license and one document showing proof of identity)
  • Complete the license renewal application (it can be completed online or printed)
  • Visit your local Wisconsin DMV with your completed application
  • Have a new license photo taken
  • Complete your vision screening
  • Pay the license renewal fee
Having a valid driver’s license in Wisconsin is required before you can get behind the wheel of a car—so is having valid insurance that meets
minimum state requirements
