How do you renew a driver's license in Illinois?
I’ll be traveling next month, but my Illinois license will expire while I’m away. How do I renew it so it’s valid for the duration of my trip?

Renewing your license before you travel is the best way to avoid running into problems during your trip. You can renew a driver’s license in
Illinois
online, in person, or by mail. If you’re eligible to renew your license online, you will receive a letter by mail providing the PIN or Renewal Authorization Number. If you didn’t receive a letter by mail, you can look up your online renewal eligibility or call 217-785-1424.
If you’re renewing your license online, follow these steps:
- Visit the Safe Driver Renewal website of the Secretary of State’s office
- Enter the Renewal Authorization Number or PIN found on the front of the renewal letter
- Follow the instructions
- Pay the online renewal fee by an authorized method of payment (this will include an online processing fee)
To renew your license in person:
- Locate your local Driver Services office
- Complete an application and have your current driver’s license with you
- Complete a vision test and have your photo taken
- Pay the applicable license renewal fee (card, cash, or check)
If your license has been expired for more than one year, you are required to complete a vision, written, and road test prior to renewal.
Note that you can only renew by mail if your renewal letter states that you can do so. If you are eligible for mail renewal, follow the instructions in your letter.
