How do you pay road tolls in Massachusetts?

I’m heading to Massachusetts in a couple of weeks, and I know I’ll be driving on toll roads. How do I pay the fees?

The easiest way to pay road tolls in Massachusetts is with E-ZPass MA. You must purchase (for free) a transponder that attaches to the front windshield of your car. Your E-ZPass MA transponder will provide discounted rates on all toll roads in Massachusetts and is also accepted in other states that use E-ZPass.
If you choose this method, you’ll have to create an E-ZPass MA account and make an initial payment to establish an account balance. The fees will be deducted from your account balance as you travel along toll roads. Your account will auto-replenish if the balance runs too low with your assigned payment choice.
Alternatively, you can use the pay-by-plate option, whereby you’ll be mailed a Pay By Plate MA Invoice within ten days of your trip. A $0.60 fee is applied to each invoice, and if your invoice isn’t paid by the due date, additional fees will be added. Outstanding toll violations can lead to a license suspension.
