My Toyota Yaris finally died, which is actually fine. I’ve been wanting to buy another car for a while anyway. How do you get rid of a broken-down car?
Option | Pros/Cons |
---|---|
Sell or trade in your car | Check to see whether your car has any value on Kelley Blue Book—that is if it still runs! It may be that what you think of as a “broken down car” has some value to a dealer or to a person looking for a junker to drive around. However, be honest about any problems it has and don’t expect to get much for it. |
Donate your car to a charity | You’ve likely heard the jingles on the radio about charities that accept junkers. Many of them will even pick up ones that don’t run. And you’ll get a tax write off too. |
Call a junkyard or junk remover | Your car’s parts may be valuable to a junkyard owner. Call around to see whether you can get a junkyard not only to come to pick up your car but also to offer you a few dollars for it. |
Go green | Recently, companies that focus on disposing of old cars in an environmentally-friendly way have sprung up. Google around for some names. They often pay you some cash for the car as well. |
