How do you check the transmission oil on a BMW?
I drive a BMW. The shifting has been a bit noisy and rough recently. I think it just needs some transmission oil. What’s the best way to check a BMW’s transmission oil?

Noisy or rough shifting are telltale signs of transmission issues with your

, so taking a look under the hood is a great first step!To check the transmission oil on a BMW, you’ll actually be checking the transmission fluid as cars don’t use oil for the transmission. To check the transmission fluid, you should:
- Park on a flat surface and let the engine run for a few minutes. The engine should always be warm before checking the transmission fluid.
- Open the hoodand locate the transmission fluid dipstick. Typically, the transmission fluid dipstick is next to the oil dipstick, but you should consult the owner’s manual if you’re having trouble.
- Remove the dipstick and inspect the fluid on it. If the fluid is anything but clear with a slight pink hue, you should visit a mechanic.
- Clean off the dipstick using a rag and insert it back into the vehicle.
- Pull out the dipstick again and check the fluid level using the markings on the dipstick.
- Add transmission fluid as necessary, being careful not to overfill. Using a funnel may make this process easier.
If the transmission fluid level and quality look normal, but the problem persists, you should visit a mechanic to have the vehicle professionally serviced.
