Can you change from 2WD to 4WD while driving?

I live in New England. During winter, snow squalls can occur without warning and dump several inches of snow in minutes. Since I might be driving during one of these anomalies, I want to make sure I can put my car in 4WD. Can you switch from 2WD to 4WD while driving?

Most 4WD vehicles have the option to switch from either front or rear-wheel drive to full 4WD. Since you live in an area with crazy weather, this can come in handy. Thankfully, you can change from 2WD to 4WD while driving as long as you’re traveling 60 mph or less.
However, avoid switching between low and high 4WD when you’re driving. This can damage your gearbox and differential. In addition, you shouldn’t rely solely on 4WD to keep you safe while driving in snow. You still need to drive slow enough to handle curves, turns, and the conditions of the road.
If you’re in an area with extreme weather like New England, consider upping your coverage limits on your car insurance for more protection. To find the best rate, download the
