Doing car maintenance on your own is a great way to save money and become better acquainted with your car! It can be a little daunting if you’ve never done it before—but we believe in you!
To change the oil in your 2011
Subaru Outback
, you’ll need:
  • 7 quarts of 5w-30 oil
  • Oil filter
  • Funnel
  • Strap wrench
  • 17mm socket with 3/8” wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Paper towels or rag
  • Rubber gloves
Follow these steps:
  • Warm up the engine for a few minutes, then turn the car off
  • Get under your Subaru
  • Use the strap wrench to remove the oil filter
  • Let the oil drain from the old oil filter
  • Prepare the new filter by adding some new oil to it and lightly oiling the gasket
  • Before installing the new filter, clean the area where it seals to the car
  • Install the new filter by hand and then tighten with the strap wrench
  • Use the 17mm socket wrench to loosen the oil plug
  • Put your gloves on, put the oil pan in place, and remove the oil plug
  • Let the oil drain into the pan until it completely stops
  • Put the oil plug back in and tighten it with the 17mm socket wrench
  • Now
    pop the hood
and remove the oil filler cap
  • Place the funnel in the opening and start adding new oil
  • When you’ve added all seven quarts, replace the oil filler cap and close the hood
You’re done! You just changed the oil in your 2011 Subaru Outback on your own!
