How do you change the oil in a 2011 Subaru Outback?
I want to start doing simple car maintenance at home to save some money. I think changing the oil is a good place to start, but I don’t know how. How do you do an oil change in a 2011 Subaru Outback?

Doing car maintenance on your own is a great way to save money and become better acquainted with your car! It can be a little daunting if you’ve never done it before—but we believe in you!
- 7 quarts of 5w-30 oil
- Oil filter
- Funnel
- Strap wrench
- 17mm socket with 3/8” wrench
- Drain pan
- Paper towels or rag
- Rubber gloves
Follow these steps:
- Warm up the engine for a few minutes, then turn the car off
- Get under your Subaru
- Use the strap wrench to remove the oil filter
- Let the oil drain from the old oil filter
- Prepare the new filter by adding some new oil to it and lightly oiling the gasket
- Before installing the new filter, clean the area where it seals to the car
- Install the new filter by hand and then tighten with the strap wrench
- Use the 17mm socket wrench to loosen the oil plug
- Put your gloves on, put the oil pan in place, and remove the oil plug
- Let the oil drain into the pan until it completely stops
- Put the oil plug back in and tighten it with the 17mm socket wrench
- Place the funnel in the opening and start adding new oil
- When you’ve added all seven quarts, replace the oil filler cap and close the hood
You’re done! You just changed the oil in your 2011 Subaru Outback on your own!
