How do you brake smoothly while driving?

I’m a driver-in-training, and I’m still getting used to some of the finer details. My braking is a mess. Got any tips on braking smoothly while driving?

First off, welcome to the road! It can take a while to get the hang of it, but the key to braking smoothly is to anticipate the stop and begin braking early.
As a new driver, you have a lot of responsibility to
practice safe driving techniques
. Try executing the following steps to practice smoother braking:
  • Position your right foot so that you can fully access the brake with the ball of your foot without having to lift your heel
  • Position your left foot firmly on the slant of the car floor for stability and ease
  • Scan the road ahead to stay aware of upcoming stops
  • Hover the ball of your foot over the brake when you spot potential hazards
  • Begin to brake early when you’ve anticipated an upcoming stop or slow down
  • Press the brake pedal until you feel resistance and gradually increase your pressure until you come to a stop
If you follow these steps, you’ll have a strong technique for smoother braking in no time. Once you’ve got braking down, it’s never too early to start
