How do toll roads work in New York?

I’ll be traveling through New York on the Thruway next month, but I heard they no longer accept cash payments. How do toll roads work in New York?

Thankfully, the toll road payment system couldn’t be easier. Here’s how toll roads work in New York:
  • If you have an existing E-ZPass—even if it’s from another state—you’ll pay 30% less than tolls would cost otherwise. The tolls will be automatically applied to your E-ZPass account while you’re driving.
  • If you don’t have an E-ZPass, you still don’t have to stop to pay tolls in New York. Instead, the Thruway camera system will capture an image of your license plate. Then, in about 30 days or so, the registered owner of the vehicle will receive the toll bill.
Here’s some information on how the New York Thruway Authority handles mail-paid toll bills:
  • Due date: Your bill is due 30 days after you receive it.
  • Fee schedule: Your toll will cost 30% more than what E-ZPass customers are billed. You’ll also have to pay a $2 administrative fee.
  • Late payments: If your payment isn’t received on time, you’ll get another bill with a $5 late fee.
  • Unpaid bill: If the late bill notice isn’t paid, you will be cited with a violation and charged an additional $50 violation fee.
If it remains unpaid, your bill will go to a collection agency, and if you let the notices of violation stack up, you could end up with a suspended driver’s license.
No matter what you’re driving or where you go, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got the right
