How Do I Unfreeze My Windshield Wipers?

I moved to North Dakota for a new job earlier this year and was shocked to discover my windshield wipers frozen to my windshield one morning. If I have to park in an outdoor lot, how do I safely unfreeze my wipers once they’re stuck?

Congrats on the move and the new job! Frozen windshield wipers can definitely wipe a smile off your face. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to unfreeze your wipers.
Here’s how to unfreeze windshield wipers:
  • Manually
remove as much snow or ice
as possible, while being gentle with the wipers.
  • Turn on your
    windshield defroster
to aid in melting the ice.
  • Try home remedies, such as a solution of three parts vinegar to one part water, or two parts vodka to one part water, which will speed up the defrosting process. If you have a jar of pickles or olives, try using the juice or brine. The vinegar and salt will help melt the ice, though your car may smell like a deli.
  • Spray a commercial de-icer windshield washer fluid onto blades, letting it sit for a couple minutes before trying to gently lift the wipers from the windshield. Repeat as needed.
