“Selling a car in South Carolina is actually a relatively simple process. Once you find an interested buyer and exchange payment, just sign the title over to them.
On the back of the title, include the following information:
Odometer reading at the time of sale
After your car is sold, you’ll need to notify the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and complete a Notice of Vehicle Sold (SCDMV Form 416), which can be found on their website. Then, mail it to the following address:
SCDMV
Mail-in Registration
PO Box 1498
Blythewood, SC 29016-0036
If the buyer is making payments on the vehicle, they will need to complete section F of the Title Application (SCDMV Form 400). You will be considered the lienholder for that vehicle and retain possession of the title until the buyer has paid in full. At that point, they will have a clean title.
Don’t forget—you’ll want to cancel your insurance
once the buyer takes the car. Canceling insurance is usually as simple as calling your insurance agent and asking them about their cancellation process. When you buy your new Jeep, consider shopping for new coverage using the Jerry
app. Jerry is an insurance broker designed to connect you with the best coverage for your needs and your budget without selling your information or making you fill out long forms or sit through aggravating phone calls. Just find the policy for you, and let Jerry do the rest!”
