How do I pay for toll roads in Colorado?

I recently moved from New York City to Colorado, and I’ll need to use toll roads to get to and from work. I rarely carry cash around anymore, and I’m worried I won’t have the correct change on hand to pay for the toll. How do I pay for toll roads in Colorado?

Paying for ExpressToll Lanes in Colorado is simple—when you drive through a tolling point and under the electronic tolling meter, the toll amount is automatically deducted from your ExpressToll account.
Of course, you’ll need to set up an ExpressToll account with the Colorado Department of Transportation in order to use the state’s toll roads, but that’s easy. You’ll prepay a $35 balance, $18 of which will be used to pay for your transponder sticker, which will be sent to you to stick in your vehicle. The remaining $17 can be used to pay for future tolls as you use them.
Each toll’s cost will differ depending on the time of day and traffic. Toll rates are posted on both electronic and static signs prior to entering the toll, so you’ll know exactly how much money will be debited from your account.
If you do not have an ExpressToll Account, you can still use Colorado’s toll roads. However, the state’s License Plate Toll be used, and you’ll be charged at a higher rate than ExpressToll Account users. With the License Plate Toll, cameras photograph both front and rear license plates and bill the registered owner of the vehicle.
