This weekend, I changed the oil in my car for the first time. I’m pretty proud of myself, but now I need some help. How do I know where to dispose of engine oil? I know it can’t just be put out in regular garbage and needs to be recycled properly.

Congratulations on learning a new car maintenance skill! Where to dispose of engine oil is actually fairly easy to determine in most areas. Call your local recycling center to see whether they can accept motor oil and drive it over.
Otherwise, you can always take used engine oil to an oil retailer such as AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts. Under law, most retailers who sell oil must accept your old oil.
If you will be putting your used oil out for pickup or transporting it to a store or recycling center, be sure to use the correct container. Experts recommend that you reuse the plastic bottle the oil came in. If you do not have an oil bottle, use one made out of sturdy enough plastic so that the oil will not leak.
