How do I keep luggage dry in a truck bed?

My husband and I are planning a cross-country camping trip this summer. We’ve mapped out our itinerary and selected our gear, but because we have an F-150 (without a cap), we need to figure out how to keep our stuff from getting wet. Can you tell me how to keep luggage dry in a truck bed?

That sounds like a fantastic adventure! For truck owners without a cap, how to keep luggage dry in a truck bed can seem like a big problem. The least expensive way to keep luggage and gear dry is to use a few strapped-down tarps—but there are other approaches as well.
Here are some ideas:
  • Wood pallets. Placing wooden pallets in the truck bed will create a platform you can place your gear on, keeping it above any water that may get into the bed.
  • Tarps. First, put a tarp down in the bed or on top of the pallets. Then, place your belongings on top of the tarp. Finally, wrap tarps around your luggage and camping gear, keeping those tarps in place with bungee cords.
  • Contractor bag. Again, place a tarp down in your truck bed or pallets, but instead of wrapping your belongings in tarps, place your items in large trash bags—contractor bags that come in 55 gal. sizes and are extra thick. Use duct tape to seal them up.
Keep in mind that you don’t want to be digging around in the back of your truck looking for items. Find a way to label tarps and contractor bags so you’ll know where items are.
