How do I get a duplicate car title in California?
I’m applying for a car title loan, but I lost my title! I need to get a duplicate as soon as possible. What steps do I need to take to get a duplicate car title in California?

Car titles are important documents, but they’re easy to misplace. Luckily, getting a new one is relatively easy!
Follow these steps to get a duplicate car title in California:
- Complete an Application for a Duplicate Title Form (Form REG 227).
- Pay a $20 fee for the duplicate title.
- Mail or bring the application form and fee to your local DMV.
Here’s the information you’ll need to fill out the application:
- Driver’s license
- License plate number
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Vehicle make and year
- Vehicle registration card
- Titleholder release form (Form REG 166) if you’ve paid off your loan
- Lienholder information if you haven’t paid off the loan
