Are trees covered by home insurance?

A big tree in our backyard fell down yesterday, when it was particularly windy. Thankfully, it missed the house, but now we need to remove it. Are trees covered by home insurance?

Sorry about your fallen tree! We’re so glad to hear that it missed your home. Fallen trees are covered by home insurance only in some situations.
Home insurance is primarily intended to protect your property (the house and other detached structures) from
named perils
.
If your policy includes windstorms, your tree fell due to a covered peril, but it didn’t didn’t damage any buildings, making your situation unclear. Some
insurance companies
will cover tree removal without property damage. However, most will not.
Since the tree didn’t damage your house or a detached structure, the tree removal is probably not covered, meaning you’ll have to pay for tree removal out-of-pocket.
If you want to try filing a claim anyway, expect a claims adjuster to come out to your property to assess the situation. If they find that the tree was already rotting, your coverage will be denied because rotten trees are considered preventable sources of damage.
