How do I fix a car window that is off track?
How do you put a window back on track? I was driving with my windows down, but there was too much wind blowing my hair around and impairing my vision, so I rolled up my windows. I’m not sure what happened, but one of my windows did not roll up correctly.

Don’t worry; there is a way to realign your car window on the window track again.
To fix a car window that is off track, try the following steps:
- Take apart all attachments on thedoorpanel, including the window crank (buttons that activate the electric window switch), armrests, and cupholders.
- Remove the door panel. First, you will need to take out all the screws on the interior door door panel. Carefully wedge a tool under the edge of the panel and push in a downward motion to pop off the frame. Disconnect all the fasteners attached to the door panel.
- Check the window motor. If the electric window motor is not functioning properly, this may be a sign that there is something wrong with the motor. Use a voltometer to check if there are mechanical damages with the motor. If the display from the voltmeter is between +12 to - 12, this means the window motor is working properly.
- Check the cables. The wirings inside the door can also be worn out and not work properly. Typically, when windows are off track, it is due to faulty cables.
- Move the glass pane. Sliding and realigning the glass pane into the lines of the window frame, also called the window channel, use one hand to move the glass pane down to the base of the window frame. Use your free hand to hold the bottom edge of the glass to ensure it is positioned correctly.
- Ensure the window realigned properly. To make sure your car window is lined up on the track, check your owner’s manual. Not all window tracks are the same.
- Check if the rollers and tracks are well lubricated. If you notice that they are dry, it is likely there is built up dirt and dust. Remove this using a brush then apply a lubricant designed for vehicles.
- Reassemble the door panel. Once you have tested if the window works correctly, connect all the wires, screws, and components on the door panel.
