You are right, a thermostat that is stuck open is a serious problem. You can save a trip to the mechanic by fixing a thermostat that is stuck in the open position yourself. It’s easy too!
To fix a thermostat that if stuck open you will:
  • Park your car on a flat surface and allow the engine to cool
  • Locate the thermostat
  • Remove the radiator cap
  • Disconnect the radiator hoses from the engine
  • Replace the valves in the thermostat hoses
If the problem continues, you’ll have to replace the thermostat altogether.
