How do I drive in snow with front-wheel drive?

I just moved from Alabama to New Hampshire because that’s where my wife is from. Believe it or not, I’ve never seen snow before, let alone driven in it. I don’t have four-wheel drive, so I’m a bit nervous. What are some tips for driving in the snow with front-wheel drive?

Congrats on your move to
New Hampshire
to get closer with your in-laws! If you’ve never driven in snow before, it can feel overwhelming, but you can do it! Here are some tips to drive in snow with front-wheel drive:
  • Anticipate turns ahead, as well as the movements of other drivers.
  • If you don’t think your front-wheel drive can handle the terrain or level of snow, don’t attempt to drive over it.
  • Always make fluid motions; don’t jerk the wheel.
  • Limit your distractions.
  • Ease off the gas rather than use the brakes, as this will help your front wheels grip the road better.
  • Also, ease off the gas if you’re in a skid, as this is more effective than turning into the skid with a front-wheel-drive vehicle.
  • Keep your revving to a minimum.
  • Equip your car with winter tires.
  • Carry snow chains in your trunk just in case you need them.
In addition to these tips,
pack a winter emergency kit
in case you’re stranded in a blizzard or a winter squall.
